From MTV.com:

Bad Boy Records rapper Black Rob (born Robert Ross) was sentenced to up to seven years in jail for grand larceny Thursday (March 30) in New York. Rob was picked up on a fugitive warrant February 24 after skipping out on an agreement to turn himself in January 24 to begin serving a two-to-six-year sentence on the charges. A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney's office said the rapper was given the maximum sentence on the charge due to his flight. He will begin serving immediately.

I was hoping that it wouldn't come to this, even if I kind of suspected it would. There is a big difference between 7 years and 2-6 years. He should have just turned himself in. Rob has issues. This is why there was no second single for The Black Rob Report and why, some would say, promotion of his album stalled. You can't promote an album if the artist isn't focused, if the artist is getting in trouble, if the artist is locked up. I'm a fan of B.R. and this is sad news. Hopefully he gets his issues straightened out and gets himself back on track.

WhatsPoppin.net has a gallery of photos from what they're calling the Bad Boy Artists' Meet and Greet. With almost 100% certainty (can never be 100%), we can say that this is the event that was mentioned on MTV.com.

In attendance was Diddy (of course), Harve Pierre, Yung Joc, Cheri Dennis, Babs (that should put an end to the "Babs has been dropped" rumors - for the time being), Aasim, DJ Mr. Cee, DJ Clark Kent, DJ Finesse, among others.

LA police pay $1 million to shot gangster rapper's family:

The family of Notorious B.I.G... has been awarded $1.1 million (£633,000) for police negligence.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was blamed for the collapse of a wrongful death trial brought against the city by the relatives of the singer last year.

... Today's payment is intended to cover the family's legal costs for the mis-trial, allowing them to bring a fresh suit against Los Angeles later this year.

Well, it's not completely launched, but you can see how it looks, listen to "Goin Down" (it's not "It's Goin' Down," even though that is how it had been labeled previously, perhaps not officially) and read a bio.

From his bio: other tracks on the album will be "Patron," "Dope Boy Magic" (produced by Chino Dollar) and "First Time" (produced by Carlos and DaDa).

Just heard a clip from Hot 97 with 50 Cent. It was Miss Jones in the morning with Envy and they were interviewing him. Not sure when it was, but I'm guessing it was from today. He mentioned that he hasn't signed Carl Thomas and that he's still working with Puffy on the Mase deal. But, the interesting part was him coming out to basically slam Diddy for the deals he gave his earliest artists. Here it is (word for word as best as I can):

SOHH.com is celebrating Women's History Month by "profiling the hardest working and most beautiful females in the music video business." This week, they selected Cassie:

"I recorded my first song "Kiss Me" with Ryan back in February of 2005 for my Mom's birthday. I went to meet up with Ryan at his label at the time, Casablanca, and while I was sitting in the waiting area I could hear "Kiss Me"in the next office. He was playing it for the President of the label, Tommy Mottola," Cassie remembers. "Man, I was so embarrassed! Anyway I went in the office and I got a demo deal to sign with Casablanca. Pretty crazy. Time went by and after finishing my demos, Tommy decided that he wanted to manage me instead, so we went through that process. Suddenly I found myself with two great deals on the table and we went with Bad Boy." ...

"Personally, I believe that my job is just as important as any other woman's job. I feel like entertainers can set an example. I want to be the person that kids listen to when they won't listen to their parents. Not in a negative way, but in a progressive way. I obviously know what it's like to be a teenager because I am one; I've just grown up really fast for someone my age. I feel that if you're given the opportunity to be an 'idol' as they say, you better do it right. Being able to look up to someone when you're younger is a must, not to be them but to learn from the good and the bad in them. I hope that young girls learn from my mistakes."

So, I was just reading this article on MSNBC by Helen A.S. Popkin.

Before I get started, let me say that although I am a huge fan of Diddy, I am also a fan of Kanye West's music. I own both of his albums and his video anthology. And for all intensive purposes and from everything I have read, Diddy and Kanye are fans of each other (Kanye is working/has worked on Diddy's upcoming album).

Opinions ("Considering Diddyís multimillion-dollar Sean John line, which won Diddy Menswear Designer of the Year several years in a row, Westís unique take on fashion will no doubt garner similar success." - yeah, success is a given and Diddy just lucks into it all. Forget hard work.) aside, this article makes it pretty clear that the author is really just out to get Diddy here. There is, of course, the obligatory, nonsensical name jokes (he's been Diddy for more than a decade, folks...), but there is more than that. There is a disregard for fact and what appears to have been a lack of research. I'll highlight some of the more blatant ones (there are smaller things here and there, like the fact that Diddy didn't sell Bad Boy to Warner).

Cassie posted on her blog that she recorded a track with Fonzworth Bentley. Ryan Leslie posted a video of Fonzworth freestyling over the beat for what he called "yet another Cassie work-in-progress." So, it would seem that the video was from the session with Cassie, although we can't be 100% certain. Cassie mentions that the session was recorded and that we should stay tuned for a video. But is that another video or the one we've already seen?

So, is the track for Cassie's album, Bentley's album or? Can't be sure.

The new version (supposedly) with Yung Joc is on her MySpace (not sure if this is her official MySpace or not, but it would certainly appear to be). The rumor is that this version is the version that will make the video.

So, if that is the case, the question is, what happened to the Biggie version that Ryan Leslie talked about - what Biggie verse was on there and will we get to hear that version? (There was an I Love You remix floating around online with a Biggie verse on it, but there is really no way that that was the one because it used recycled Diddy ad libs).

From the bio at the official site, we are able to glean some info on her upcoming album.

One of the interludes on the album is called "Finally Made It." (In the bio, it later mentions this as a song, as well. So, is it two tracks named "Finally Made It" or one? We're not sure). There is a song called "Matrix" that was produced by Diddy and a remake of The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Sky's the Limit" produced by Harve Pierre. Other tracks include "So Complete" (produced by Bucwild), "Caught Up," "Something," "Remind You," "Ohh La La" (if the song on her site is any indication, it will feature G. Dep), "Act Like You Know," "All I Wanna Do" and, of course, "I Love You" (produced by Ryan Leslie).

These are "Caught Up" and "Ooh La La" (featuring 2 verses from G. Dep).

The official Bad Boy site has been updated.

The roster has been updated. Additions include Los, Cassie, Christian Daniel and Ness. Various artists were removed. Off the top of my head, Black Rob and Mase. Babs was on there, I think and she is no longer. This does not mean, however, that they are actually off of the Bad Boy roster. Not all artists are listed.

Edit: Young City was removed. Carl Thomas was also removed (that may be an ominous sign).

New album release dates include Yung Joc (May 2006), Cheri Dennis (June 2006), Diddy (September 2006) and Jordan McCoy (September 2006).

Tiesha (from a Google search, I'm guessing her last name is LeShore), Diddy's former personal assistant, has quit that job in hopes of making it as a singer/songwriter. She has a blog at NS4LIFE. Her first entry contains an endorsement with Diddy, who calls her a "star in the making."

I wanted to get in touch to ask a few questions, but I couldn't find a contact (my e-mail is patrick@ifroggy.com). Not sure if she is a NextSelection artist or what not, but I imagine more details will come out over time. In any case, good luck to her.

This rumor has been making rounds lately, but this interview (March 13) has some interesting bits.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Diddy is signing you to Bad Boy to distribute your album?
I canít talk a lot about it. Honestly, Diddy is a good dude. Iíd love to be in business with him. I havenít discussed it at length beyond the fact that he really is signing Southern artists and helping Southern artists step onto a bigger plateau. ...

You donít think he overshadows artists?
Itís not that Puff takes your shine; you just gotta be a n**** that know how to shine. Puff didnít take no steam from Ma$e, he didnít take no steam from Biggie; he added to what they gave. When I saw Biggie in that suit and I seen that lilí skinny n**** run out next to him in a suit, the n**** who owns the company hype-manning for him, this shows that this is a n**** that, by hook or by crook, is gonna help his artists win. For all the s*** n****s talked about dude, if he standing next to you, you know you gonna be in the magazine Monday. If heís not standing next to you, youíre prayiní that your publicist is good enough to get you in the magazine.

boyzndahood on BadBoyForever.com posted an e-mail that he says that he received from a Bad Boy A&R. In this e-mail, the A&R says that the domain name for the Bad Boy site may change from badboyonline.com to badboy4life.com.

Firstly, this has to be regarded as rumor. Until it happens, if it happens at all, who knows. But, it just doesn't make a lot of sense. Numbers in domain names are generally not a good idea. They'd have to buy both badboy4life.com and badboyforlife.com. If Diddy goes on MTV and says "visit badboy4life.com", does he mean the number or the word? Also, the song was "Bad Boy for Life", so that just adds to the confusion. It's best to be avoided. If they can't persuade Bad Boy Brands to sell them the domain name, badboyonline.com is about as good as it gets.

But, putting that aside, Bad Boy doesn't appear to own badboy4ever.com. Check the whois. Someone in Amsterdam. Could that be an agent for Bad Boy? Maybe... but it's just not consistent with what has happened previously. If you go to the Network Solutions whois search and type in badboyonline.com and seanjohn.com. They are registered to Bad Boy Entertainment or Sean Combs. Check the whois on diddyonline.com. Registered to Bad Boy Worldwide. They don't own badboyforlife.com, either.

Could they be in the process of acquiring them? Maybe. But, why would anyone be telling a random Bad Boy fan before it was done? It all seems very odd and unlikely. But, wanted to mention it, nonetheless.

Nashville ruling may roil rap biz:

A U.S. District Court jury decided in Nashville yesterday that the title track [Ready to Die] is in violation of copyright laws because it included portions of a 1992 Ohio Players song without permission or paying royalties.

The jury awarded $3.5 million in punitive damages and at least $733,000 in direct damages plus interest to the rightful owners of the song. But that's not all.

District Judge Todd Campbell ordered that, effective yesterday, the 1994 album Ready To Die and the individual song of the same name must basically cease to exist in the retail world: no more compact discs in stores, no more downloads from the Internet and no more radio plays. He said the decision was necessary to "vindicate the integrity of the copyright law."

Wow... well, Bad Boy is appealing so we'll have to see what this means. I can understand the one song, but the name of the album? They don't own the right to the name "Ready to Die." The song may have to be pulled because of the sample, but the album name is different.

Are they not going to give permission for the sample, even if it is requested? I mean, one one hand, their rights may have been violated. But, on another, they have an extra $4.5 million because of it being sampled. The album is regarded by many as a classic and is certified 4x platinum by the RIAA (with 1 platinum single and 2 gold singles). I would have to believe that money can solve anything and it'll get worked out.

Warning: The music that starts playing right away is... well... decidedly not appropriate for all ages.

The site gives us the name of Ball and G's new album, which is "Pure American Pimpi*'". The site says it will be in stores in July of this year. And the song "For An Outfit" plays on the site. There is an offer to sign up "for 2 free tracks from the album!", but it is currently broken.

So, what's this? Well, my guess is that it is a mockup of a blog type site that Ryan Leslie (et. all) came up with as they are trying to get Diddy to do more with the internet, potentially to get into the blog thing as Mr. Leslie has. If Diddy started doing that, that'd be awesome. Mr. Leslie is taking advantage of what the internet has to offer. Bad Boy is not. You don't need a daily blog. You just need to keep your websites updated and give people reasons to come back. Keep it fresh.

Back in October of last year, I wrote about this on my personal blog. I'm not sure how much of it still applies now, but I am sure plenty does. The piece is reproduced here:

According to this press release:

RPM Ventures, LLC dba Reynolds Family Homes (RFH) (http://www.reynoldsfamilyhomes.com) is currently seeking an agreement with Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group to license the name "Sean John," for one of its models.

Tony Reynolds, founder of RFH, believes music impresario, fashion designer and business mogul, Sean "Diddy" Combs, recognizes the value of another revenue stream to his business. Comb's empire already includes Sean John clothing, two upscale restaurants and Blue Flame marketing.

"Martha Stewart Omnimedia Living launched her new model with KB Homes in Cary, N.C. last week," Reynolds said. "We already have contacted Mr. Combs office."

"I felt we needed a name for this 3000+ sq ft model that will exemplify the class, drive and determination of a young Black executive," Reynolds said. "Immediately Mr. Combs comes to mind."

Um... a press release to announce that you are seeking an agreement... not that you've actually reached one? It kind of gives me the impression that you are kind of hurting for publicity. Their website is particularly unimpressive. Sean John is a high quality brand associated with designer goods. Whether that's clothing, footwear, rims, etc. So, I imagine, if such a thing would ever bear the Sean John name, it'd have to be of a high quality and, as such, it would be a pricey house. Looking at their Flickr page (yes, that's the way they are showing off pictures of their work), I'm just not seeing it. But, who knows, maybe they've stepped it up a bit and created something great, deserving of the name. Still, I remain doubtful, until I see it.
