Following up on my post earlier today, I spoke briefly with Antwan "Amadeus" Thompson and he told me that the tracks that he's been working on for Dawn are songs that were written by her, with the hope of placing them with other artists. So, the solo project whispers remain just that: whispers. Thompson went on to say that he has heard nothing about such a project.

Busy news day so far. RealityWanted.com reports on the casting of a new reality show from Diddy and Mark Burnett. It's called "StarMaker" and, in it, Diddy will search for two solo artists: one guy and one girl. The competition is not genre specific and any type of solo artist is welcome to apply.

Watch a trailer for the, soon to debut, third season of Making the Band 4, below. Laurie Ann Gibson is back! I'm kind of surprised she gets featured as heavily as she does here, but I guess things must be good between her and Diddy.

Update: See this post for more details on Amadeus' work with Dawn, which relates to her as a songwriter.

In a bulletin from his MySpace, Antwan "Amadeus" Thompson, mentioned that he's currently working on new albums from Diddy and Cassie.

He also mentions that he's working on music for Dawn of Danity Kane. I've been hearing whispers that she was working on a solo album and that it would be released on Bad Boy, but nothing that I could actually report. We'll have more details as they are available.

AllHipHop.com has an interview with Janelle Monae.

AHHA: So, talking about that walking dead I really like the line in your song “Sincerely Jane” when you’re singing, “Are we really living or just walking dead?” When you sing it what do you imagine?

Janelle Monae: Exactly what it says, you know there is a difference a huge difference between one who is here alive but are they living? You’re either living or you’re walking dead, and for me I grew up around a lot of people who are walking dead. My family some of my friends, coming from a small town like Kansas sometimes, people get very hopeless. They feel like they’re stuck and the people around them keep themselves stuck too. People make up all these rules that you have to abide by and when you’re in a small town, it’s hard to really be free without people whispering.

For me that was true, and it hurts me every time I have a conversation with a family member. I’ll call home and they’re lost or they’re on drugs or just trying to find themselves and I purposefully call back so I could stay connected. I know that I have to as an artist, really, really make them proud and hopefully inspire them and let them know just because we come from an environment, we don’t have to be of that environment.

I just received a quick notice from someone in marketing at Bad Boy, regarding a recently leaked track called "Soldier 4 Love" that had been attributed to Cassie. The reason they sent the note was to let me know that this track is not actually Cassie, going on to say that Cassie and/or Bad Boy have no affiliation with the song.

From the press release:

The Hip Hop Caucus, www.hiphopcaucus.org, and Multi-Platinum, Grammy Award Winning Superstar T.I. have joined forces to launch a powerful new voter registration and Get Out the Vote campaign that combines the power of celebrity and media with 21st century grassroots organizing tactics to mobilize and educate young people between the ages of 18 and 29, who are not in college. The campaign slogan, "Respect My Vote!" and t-shirts were unveiled today at a press event in Washington, DC, with DJ Green Lantern, Dawn from Danity Kane, Young Berg, Maino, Wale, Young Steff, Washington Wizard Etan Thomas, Olympic Gold Medalist Anthony Killieberew, Immortal Technique, Pleasure P, World Class Sprinter and Champion Michael Walton, BET Executive Vice President Stephen Hill and many others turning out to support.

The campaign, led by T.I., will employ other celebrities, athletes and high profile influential figures to get out the vote in a variety of ways including PSAs for radio, television and online use; in person appearances; press events; mobile and email alerts from celebrities themselves; and an aggressive online campaign. Famed photographer Jonathan Mannion has been exclusively tapped to shoot portraits of the famous faces adoring the "Respect My Vote!" slogan and t-shirt produced by forthcoming AKOO clothing line as well as direct and produce the PSAs. Confirmed participating talent will be announced throughout the campaign leading up to the November election.

Grassroots voter registration activities will be led by Hip Hop Caucus community-based street teams in seventeen (17) cities across the nation: CA (Bay Area), FL (Miami), GA (Atlanta), IN (Indianapolis), MD (Baltimore), MI (Detroit), MO (St. Louis), NC (Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham), OH (Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus), PA (Philadelphia), TX (Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston), VA (Richmond), and DC (Washington, DC).

Hip Hop Caucus President, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., who helped create VOTE OR DIE! with Sean "Diddy" Combs in 2004, explains, "No matter who wins in November, if large numbers of young people do not vote, then we all lose. It does not bode well for the future of our country, and our Democracy, if young people, particularly those who are not in college, are not engaged or involved in the electoral process. This campaign is critical in strengthening our Democracy and thus protecting our freedom."

Half of young Americans ages 18-29 have never enrolled in college. According to research done by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), a non-partisan research center, nearly 80 percent of the young voters who turned out on Super Tuesday had college experience. The disparity between college educated and non-college educated young voter participation is also evident by their turnout rates: one in four eligible young voters with college experience voted on Super Tuesday, compared with one in 14 eligible young voters with no college experience.

Based on these statistics, the Hip Hop Caucus and T.I. have elected to focus on engaging those individuals who are part of the larger scope of the non-college and non-voting community.

T.I., who is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated new album, "Paper Trail" (Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records) on September 30th and has grown to truly be one of his generation's most captivating speakers, explains, "It's an honor and a pleasure to be involved with the Hip Hop Caucus and be a part of such a worthy cause and important campaign. I look forward to urging the masses to take advantage of the right that I no longer have."

This campaign will build on what worked in 2004 by using proven market outreach strategies in an electoral context. With programs including bus tours, street teams to register voters, voter education events during the Democratic and Republican Conventions and other events, we will integrate the audience building capacity of celebrities and media, and the data management and technology available for political organizations. The campaign will provide insights and data into the political behavior of this generally unengaged citizenry, and build sustainable community participation.

I watched the "I Want to Work for Diddy" casting special last night. It was pretty much an introduction of the concept of the show and some of the thinks that the contestants will be put through during the season.

The show has potential. It looks like it'll be a good, funny, interesting and even inspiring, business wise, show with more than a dash of made for TV drama. There's no doubt that Diddy's a demanding boss, but it was interesting to see the people who have been Diddy's assistants and what they are doing now. It's incredible to see what they have gone on to do. One of the themes is that, if you are there for Diddy - he'll be there for you. Beyond just being great for your resume, there is a lot of great experience to gain.

I'm looking forward to watching it when it premieres on August 4 at 9:00 PM ET on VH1.

And let's be honest, all of the ladies out there are going to be thanking us for this campaign. The images are so strong; they speak for themselves. We are truly excited to welcome Nelly into the Sean John family."

Nelly said, "I have been a big fan of Diddy and the Sean John clothing line for years. So, when they asked me to work with them, it was a real honor. I hope my fans will enjoy this campaign as much as I did shooting it."

Styles will include briefs, boxer-briefs, boxers, undershirts, pajamas and robes, among others. “This is an overall plan of mine I’ve had for the past year to take over the airwaves,” Diddy revealed to AllHipHop.com. “For the month of August I have three shows on the air. On Monday you have I Want to Work for Diddy, Tuesday you have Run’s House, and Wednesday you got Making the Band. So every time you turn on VH1 or MTV you’ll see the Bad Boy logo or hear the music. It’s a lot of real estate and brand marketing that I’m experimenting with along with the creative content that I’ve put together.”

Following up on Cassie's statement, regarding the recent rumors, we have a blog post from Diddy.

There are rumors floating around that Diddy and Cassie are engaged. These rumors are fueled by a report in a gossip publication that is being spread around. To me, this is the same old nonsense repeating and, considering where it's coming from, it's almost certainly untrue. So, that's why we haven't acknowledged it.

But, as it's been spreading, Cassie felt the need to issue a statement through a MySpace bulletin.

"The purpose of this note is simply to clear up a rumor. The newest one is that I am engaged. That rumor is completely false and I have no clue how it came to be or why it got so big, but it's not true, real talk," she says in the message.

Update: I'm being told that this list is out of date, despite being just released. I'll have more soon, hopefully. Stay tuned.

It's been a long time since we've seen one of these, but care of Anthony from Bad Boy in the forums, we have a big one.

August 12, 2008: "Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition)" by Janelle Monae
September 2, 2008: "Just a Rolling Stone" by Donnie Klang
September 23, 2008: "Don't Feed The Animals" by Gorilla Zoe
December 2008: "Bad Boy Holiday Album" by Various Artists
January 2009: TBD by Cassie
January 2009: TBD by Janelle Monae
January 2009: TBD by Mario Winans
February 2009: TBD by Cheri Dennis
February 2009: TBD by Jordan McCoy
March 2009: TBD by Marina Chello
April 2009: TBD by Danity Kane
May 2009: TBD by Day26
June 2009: TBD by Donnie Klang (I checked with Anthony and it is June, even though the post is without a month)
July 2009: "Making the Band" by Various Artists
September 2009: TBD by Gorilla Zoe
TBD: "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" by Yung Joc
TBD: TBD by Aasim

My standard disclaimer: beyond the first three dates, these should all be treated extremely tentatively. But, it does give you an idea of what Bad Boy is looking to do next. And no, I have absolutely no idea what "Making the Band" by Various Artists is. I'll throw out a couple of guesses: it could be the next group or act built through Making the Band. Or it could be the group they build in Making the Rock Band.

A bulletin from Donnie Klang's MySpace points to donnieklangonline.com, where you are able to pre-order his upcoming debut album, "Just a Rolling Stone," and receive a free poster with your order. However, what was more interesting is that there was a track listing featured on the page. Here it is:

1. "Intro"
2. "Take You There" featuring Diddy
3. "Dr. Love"
4. "Hurt That Body"
5. "Hollywood Girl"
6. "Pick it Up"
7. "Pretty Girls Cry"
8. "Catch My Breath"
9. "Bedroom (Interlude)"
10. "Not a Love Song"
11. "Which One"
12. "Love in Stereo"
13. "Just a Rolling Stone"
14. "My Idol"
15. "The Pain (Interlude)"
16. "The Rain"

The tracklisting on the site does not mention any features, so we don't know if there are any other guest appearances or not. Back in May, producer Seven Aurelius indicated that he would be keeping "Rolling Stone" for his own album. It's unclear if "Just a Rolling Stone" on this track listing and the previously mentioned "Rolling Stone" are one in the same.

S.F. Fashion Examiner has an interview with Janelle Monae:

Dino-Ray: So you've worked with Big Boi from Outkast and you recently got signed to Bad Boy - how did all of this start?

Janelle Monae: I actually met Big Boi and Sean Combs's restaurant, Justin's, in Atlanta. I was performing on stage and it was around the time when I was doing an AUC dorm lounge tour. I would just perform and uplift the students. I guess Big Boi liked what he heard. After I performed, I felt this person grab my arm and he was like, "We have to work together. I want you to be on this compilation CD I am working on, 'Got Purp Volume II'" The song, "Letting Go," was my first national release. After that, he and Andre asked me to be on "Idyllwild." I was so nervous because I grew up listening to Outkast and they've been a huge influence in my music. And for them to want me to be a part of their project was overwhelming. I learned a lot. My song, "Call of Law" was featured on that album. When I formed my label, Big Boi helped us out. I put out an independent project and that caught Sean's (Combs) attention. He had written me on my Myspace page and I didn't write back because I didn't know what's going on. I was like, "Who's this?" Because you never know on Myspace. (laughs) Then Big Boi called me and said that he really wanted to work with us. I said, "Okay, if he's serious he should come to my show." I talked to (Sean Combs) on the phone and he was excited. He said he had never seen anything like this before and he wanted to support us. He was very impressed with us and understood our brand. He didn't want his brand to trump what we were doing. He just felt that what we did was a gift to the music industry. He didn't want to interfere creatively.

DR: That is very humble of him.

JM: Very - because he's so busy. For him, just to give something like this is a big deal. I hope to work with a lot of people. My circle is not limited. I am not afraid to speak with the Sean Combs' who are more business minded or to collaborate with people who are like Outkast. I think it's about bridging that gap. For me, it's about breaking out of those boundaries. You never know who can give you a helping hand - especially in this industry. I am very comfortable with where I am, I'm not going to be sidetracked. I have a mission to accomplish and I won't compromise - and they respect that.

CrossFade has a review of Thursday's Janelle Monae show at the Delano in Miami Beach, Florida.

She came out from behind a curtain of strobe lights and fabricated smoke, but all of the faux atmosphere in the world couldn’t outshine Janelle Monae last night at the Florida Room. She played to a capacity crowd in the SoBe speakeasy, and Neo-soulsters, hipsters, and yuppies in the crowd drank up Monae’s style. ...

DJBooth.net has an interview with Gorilla Zoe.

DJ Booth: Welcome to the Zoo, of course, your debut album, received mixed reviews, and most likely did not sell as many copies [as] you probably would have like for your release. When you think about the entire process – we’re talkin’ about recording, to the release, to retail – was the project, in your eyes, a success, a failure, or somewhere in between?

Gorilla Zoe: For me it was a success. I had no recorded albums. The single Hood Figga blew up so fast. I didn’t even know what I did to record that, you know? So, I had my album done before I went on promo Boyz n da Hood, so I jumped straight out there on promo for that album, because that album was comin’ out before mine, way before mine, but then it got pushed back, you know, comin’ out before mine, but right around the same time. I had been on promo, for the songs that I’d been workin’ on for the album, because the single was blowin’ up so fast, people wanted to hear some more stuff. I think it was a great job, first comin’ [into] the game, first album. I kept it real on the album, all the way, one hundred. If you listen to the mixtapes that came off the album, I’ve learned how to use my voice; I realized I’ve got a unique voice, and I’ve learned how to use it, not only to express myself with words, but be able to tell you through the delivery, and people like hearin’ it.

AllHipHop.com has an interview with Donnie Klang.

AHHA: At the end of Making the Band II, Puff basically got fed up with Da Band and broke them up. He was supposedly going to release solo projects from some of the members, but that never really happened either. What are you going to do to make sure that you don’t end up in the Bad Boy graveyard with them?

Donnie: It’s really just about your own work ethic and how bad you want it. A lot of people say “you got your deal, you finally made it,” but that’s really not true. It’s just the beginning of all the work it’s gonna be. It’s tough, but you gotta get the right management and make sure everything’s right on the business end so you can just concentrate on making hot music and getting that live performance together. Beyond that, I really want to get into movies, TV and possibly some modeling to really make a brand out of myself.

From Artnet News:

Somehow it’s no surprise that fast-talking Phillips, de Pury & Co. chairman Simon de Pury, a master of the auctioneer’s speedy spiel, also knows his hip-hop music. In the August 2008 Interview magazine, de Pury deftly reels off the names of his favorite songs: Genius Rap by Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, White Lines by Grandmaster Flash, Slow Jamz by Kanye West (with Twista and Jamie Fox), and This Is My Life by Slim Thug. The occasion for the interview is the forthcoming "Hip Hop’s Crown Jewels" auction at Phillips, de Pury & Co. in New York, a sale that brings examples of the high-key jewelry worn by rap stars to the auction block.

Among the lots is a jeweled Rolex watch worn by Notorious B.I.G., Lil’ Wayne’s jeweled Money Bag pendant and Biz Markie’s Headphone Necklace. Selected lots from the sale benefit the National Museum of American History’s new "Hip-Hop Won’t Stop" collection. The sale takes place Oct. 1, 2008, with viewing scheduled for Sept. 23-30, 2008. "I’d love to be a rapper," de Pury says at the end of the interview. "My name would be MC de Pury and I would represent Basel, Switzerland, the city of my birth."

Back in April, we reported that Faith Evans would be releasing a memoir in August. That day, August 29, is fast approaching. The book's cover has now been released.

null

Here's more on the book, from a press release:

Faith Evans, R&B singer and estrange wife of Notorious B.I.G. prior to his death, is set to release a “tell all” book in August. From her alleged “relationship” with Tupac to her tumultuous relationship with B.I.G., the red headed R&B songstress’ memoir will shed light some of the most intimate details of her life.”My journey has been complicated on many levels,” Faith said about the upcoming novel. “And since I am always linked to B.I.G., there are a lot of misconceptions about who I really am.”

B.I.G.’s sexual relationship with Lil Kim, Faith’s alleged drug use, and many other rumors have wound up on Faith’s doorstep throughout the years. She plans to put the chitchat to rest with her book, “Keeping The Faith,” and let her readers know what really went down behind closed doors.

“B.I.G. never got a chance to tell his story,” Faith said. “It’s been left to others to tell it for him. In making the decision to tell my own story, it means that I’ve become one of those who can give insight to who B.I.G. really was. But I can only speak of what he meant to me.”

The 368 page memoir will be his book stores on August 29th.

From the press release:

Twelve-year-old Jordan Coleman, the voice of Tyrone (the moose) on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. show The Backyardigans, is raising his voice to encourage African-American boys to stay in school. Using earnings from his voiceover career, Jordan’s youth film “SAY IT LOUD!” will be shown in seven cities this summer as part of AMC Entertainment’s AMC Summer MovieCamp® program.

Challenged by his parents to give back to his community, Jordan, an honors student at the Hackensack Middle School in New Jersey, conceived “SAY IT LOUD!” Jordan believes his film will inspire black boys to study hard and stay in school. According to statistics, less than 50% black boys graduate from high school in the United States. ...

In hopes of reaching his peers, Jordan enlisted the help of musical artists, businessmen, politicians and athletes whose larger-than-life status makes them an inspiration to young people. Jordan’s film includes appearances by Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Master P, Winky Wright, Michael Strahan, Rev. Al Sharpton, Yung Joc, Hurricane Chris, Swizz Beatz, Jadakiss, Biz Markie, the Mayor of Newark and others.

“Hopefully, when black boys see my movie they will be inspired to get a good education and to do something positive in their own community,” said Jordan. “I had so much fun making the movie and meeting celebrities. Kids get tired of hearing about the importance of education from their parents so I think they will be happy to hear that Kobe’s parents took him off the basketball team if he got bad grades and Vince Carter’s parents required him to have a 3.0 average.” ...

A nominal fee of $1 per guest will be charged, with all admission proceeds, excluding taxes, going to AMC’s charitable partners –Variety–The Children's Charity and the Will Rogers Institute. AMC will screen “SAY IT LOUD!” in New York, Washington D.C., Kansas City, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami as a double feature following the Wednesday morning film (see list of designated dates below). ...

Here is a list of dates and locations for Jordan Coleman’s “SAY IT LOUD!”

6/25 – New York; AMC Loews Magic Johnson Harlem 9
7/2 – Washington DC; AMC Loews Magic Johnson Capital Center 12
7/09 – Kansas City; AMC Barrywoods 24

Billboard's July 12 issue features a section on holiday albums and, as I read it, I was surprised (yes, again) to see this listing:

The July 12 issue of Billboard magazine contains a preview of albums that are being released or, at least, that are scheduled for release, in the fourth quarter of this year.

I was not surprised to see that Cassie's forthcoming album has been pushed back to December. What I was surprised to see, listed right next to her, was a new Diddy album. We had heard rumblings about this, but as far as I know, no date had been put on it. Until now. Still, the date is tentative at best, so don't get too attached to it.

Both album titles are listed as TBA.

Here's the track listing that was posted on Amazon.com and newburycomics.com:

1. "March of The Wolfmasters"
2. "Violet Stars Happy Hunting!"
3. "Many Moons"
4. "Cybertronic Purgatory"
5. "Sincerely, Jane"
6. "Smile"
7. "Mr. President"

A bulletin from Janelle Monae's MySpace said that the iTunes version of the album will have an alternate cover and "3 bonus tracks instead of 2." The original first suite that was released before Monae signed with Bad Boy featured the first five tracks. So, I take this to mean that "Smile" and "Mr. President" are bonus tracks and that the iTunes version will add one additional one.

Judging from her website, the filled or partially filled dots on the album cover represent the four suites that she had planned to release before signing with Bad Boy. Since one and one half dots are filled in, on the cover of the EP, that would likely indicate that this release consists of the first one and one half suites and that the full length album, due later this year, will consist of the final two and one half suites. It also appears that "special edition" is what they are calling the initial EP release. There doesn't appear to be a "non special edition" version being released.

But, I am awaiting official confirmation on this tracklisting and these other details.

BallerStatus.com has an interview with Donnie Klang.

BallerStatus.com: So what can we expect to see on your album?

Donnie Klang: Well we have the single, "Take You There" featuring Diddy, which is available on iTunes now. Also I will have some of the songs I recorded on the show like, "Dr Love" and "Rolling Stone." We're actually going to call the album Just The Rolling Stone. I also worked with the Souldiggers, Mario Winans, Bryan Cox and Danger, and the Clutch. I actually got to write a lot on my album and there's actually a chance I may get production on my album, which is huge for me because I used to make beats back in the day. The album's gonna have a lot of fresh and new music. It's definitely going to be big.

BallerStatus.com: What's been the most fun so far?

Donnie Klang: We had a lot of fun in Miami. That was pretty crazy. Not only do we get to perform and go to the after parties, but we get to be on the road. That's been a dream for me. I used to watch the old "Boys II Men" DVDs and watch them getting on the tour busses, that was the dream for me. I got my best friend from home whose 6'7 and plays d-3 ball coming to be my security.

One of the hallmarks of the Bad Boy sound in the mid-90s, through the early 2000s, was the in house production from Diddy's hand picked team of producers - The Hitmen.

4 out of 5 of Bad Boy's Hot 100 #1 singles were produced by The Hitmen. In fact, 12 of Bad Boy's 15 Top 5 singles, on the same chart, were also produced by The Hitmen or, at least, Bad Boy managed producers. On top of that, 21 of Bad Boy's 28 top 10 Hot 100 singles were produced or co-produced by someone in this group. Suffice to say, the majority of Bad Boy's biggest hits were crafted by it's in house production team.

In addition to Diddy himself, the team has consisted of such decorated producers as Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, Steven "Stevie J" Jordan, Chucky Thompson, Ron "Amen-Ra" Lawrence and Mario Winans, as well as a number of others.

But, in recent years, in house production on Bad Boy albums has dwindled. The old members of The Hitmen had, presumably, moved on and, though we heard the group's name brandied about in numerous interviews (some of those related to Jay-Z's "American Gangster"), on MySpace pages and elsewhere, we really weren't sure: who are The Hitmen now? Does such a thing even exist any longer?

The album booklet credits certainly weren't doing anyone any favors, since none of the producers we thought might be apart of the collective were credited as producing for The Hitmen. For example, in his production work on "American Gangster", Mario Winans is credited as "Yellow City Entertainment/The Senate", while Diddy, LV and Sean C were credited as "Grind Music/The Hitmen/Bad Boy Entertainment".

MTV News spoke with Danity Kane from the set of their video for "Bad Girl". The article describes the scenes featured in the video, which amount to each of the five girls adopting alter egos in five different situations. They end the description with:

The finished product will likely be a stylized mix between "The Matrix" and "Speed Racer," ending with all of the DK girls kicking butt in a massive fight scene that closes the clip.

Aubrey told MTV that they are coming out with a line of denim "from Dollhouse". Would that be this brand? Unsure. Dawn Richard is hoping to release a comic book, as well.

Check out the clip below, of D. Woods discussing Aubrey's upcoming run on Broadway.
